Adventure race enthusiasts and beginners alike will gather this Saturday, November 28, 2009 on the shores of the beautiful Wekiva River to burn off those extra Thanksgiving pounds. Pangea Adventure Racing presents their annual Turkey Burn Adventure Race, and it is the last chance this year for competitors to feel the adrenaline rush of running, biking and canoeing through uncharted wilderness. Over 200 racers have already registered, with more expected in the days leading to the race.
There are two divisions to the Pangea Adventure Races, allowing beginners and advanced racers to participate. The Sport division is perfect for those who are relatively new to adventure racing. It allows participants to get a feel for navigating through the wilderness with compass and map in hand. The sport division begins at 12 p.m. and is a 4 hour adventure on foot, bike and boat. Pangea provides a free "AR 101" training session at 11 a.m. to provide the participants with a tutorial on using a compass, reading a map, and navigating the course.
The more advanced Elite division is for those who are ready to step up from the beginner levels. Racing veterans and those wanting an intense challenge will begin at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning, finishing 12 hours later at 4 p.m. This race is a competitive, exhausting, and rewarding experience.
Pangea did not forget about the event spectators, who can participate in a variety of exciting outdoor activities. There will be a climbing wall, which was brought back for this race due to popular demand. Swimming and paddling are also options. Spectators can enjoy the pristine Wekiva River and the natural beauty of the Rock Springs Run State Reserve.
For the elite racers and spectators that enter the Wekiva Falls Resort before 8 a.m. on Saturday, the price is $7, which includes parking, a camping location, and shower facilities. Sport racers and spectators arriving at the park after 8 a.m. will pay $5, which includes parking and shower facilities.
The address of the race is: Wekiva Falls Resort, 30700 Wekiva River Rd., Sorrento, FL 32777. From I-4 Exit 101C, drive west on SR 46 for 5.5 miles, turn left on Wekiva River Road; entrance is 1.4 miles on left. Media passes are available.
